  • What is the author's purpose?
  • Who's voice dominates and who's is missing?
  • Who is target for this information and why?
  • What benefits does the author have in taking this view?
  • How does the information (not) apply to me and my beliefs?
  • What practices are being taught, shaped or valued?

After identifying the author and the author's intent, continue seeking answers:

  • How this information be interpreted differently in different contexts?
  • What could be the assumptions behind the statements?
  • How do you think the author understands reality? What could be shaping his/her understanding?
  • Who decides (what is real, can be known or needs to be done) in whose name and for whose benefit in this context?
  • What could be the implications of his/her claims (past/present/future: social, environmental, economic, etc…)?

  • Summarize with the Alphabet Book Format -- An alphabet book makes a great group-writing summary assignment. Can you come up with 26 words or ideas (all beginning with different letters of the alphabet) that summarize a topic? Here's a worksheet to help students plan theirs.
